How are farms selected?

Certification

Farms with certification are audited by the following agencies. ASPCA offers a comprehensive comparison of practices between these three agencies.

Fisheries selected are based on certifications from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for sustainable fishing practices, and on their partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch. Certain fisheries, as noted, are also certified by Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) and Global Aquaculture Alliance (BAP).

While certification information is considered to be accurate at the date of publication, please check with the certifying agency for the latest information.

Transparency

Farms without certification are chosen primarily for their transparency. It is critical that they adopt an open-door policy, which is the case for many certified farms. This important factor is what makes our directory one of a kind. We believe the best way to inform and encourage consumers is with farmers who are passionate about doing the same - those who welcome, educate, and inspire us. Against an industry that's plagued with fraud, we must acknowledge farms that champion transparency.

Farms are selected based on practices of animal welfare and sustainability standards in line with or excel beyond those of certified farms. Information demonstrating such practices must be available to the public. To further maintain transparency, farms must allow visitors or offer opportunities for consumers to tour the farm.

FYI

Solicitation-Free

This website is entirely free for visitors to use and for businesses and organizations to be listed. As this area can seem gray, let's be clear that we're here to help promote outstanding family businesses without any intention of selling them. We're also here to provide our consumers a fair marketplace, and protect them from being solicited. Everybody wins here.

Explore

Aptly named, the "explore" section serves as a place for those interested to explore a collection of some but not all of the videos, organizations, films, and literature that have inspired us in the subjects of food, nature, and of course, animals. Certain organizations, as noted, are recognized by Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) as being highly effective animal charities.
